Today we all slept in just a little, as our taxi was coming at 1130am. I’m somewhat surprised that we all are as jet lagged as we are. Usually on long flights like this I’m able to adjust in a day or two but this time its taking longer. The girls have never flown this long and Ajali hasn’t either, but remember…he slept the most on the way over lol. We are not complaining though, because we are on vacation!
Today began with our taxi driver coming at 1130 to take us to Hemingways Nairobi, in Karen. Karen is an upscale area right outside of Nairobi and Hemingways is a very nice upscale hotel. We had been told by many that the Sunday brunch at Hemingways was not to be missed, so we went! The hotel was beautiful and brunch had many options, including an omelette bar that included made to order pancakes and waffles, sushi bar, turkey, chicken shawarma, lamb, beef, veggies, potatoes, multiple types of rice, short ribs, pasta bar and a pastry table. There was even a desert table that included a cotton candy machine and a chocolate fountain, and the best part- bottomless Prosecco! There was live jazz music and sitting outside in the beautiful weather was a plus.
I’ve never really eaten lobster..except the lobster pizza at Red Lobster, and even then it was just a taste. I don’t like fish (I love McDonald’s fish sandwich though lol) and I don’t like seafood. Ajali is allergic to shrimp and Sanaa is allergic to fish and some seafood, so its never a problem not to been around it. Today I decided to try lobster because it
looked SO good and I really enjoyed it!
Jasmine was excited because she was able to have noodles with butter and salt and Sanaa is willing to try many things, so she pretty much tasted lots of food. Ajali really liked his omlette that had many hot peppers inside. He can really take the heat!
There are some videos of our brunch, and once I figure out how to upload the files properly you will be able to see them :)
After walking around the property our taxi driver took us to the Karen Blixen Museum. Have any of you heard of her? We knew a little about her and before we left home we
started watching the movie “Out of Africa” which is based on a book written with the same name by Karen Blixen. The movie is a little slow to start but was getting interesting, but we decided to finish it another day. It stars Meryl Streep and Robin Redford. It’s basically about a woman who came from Europe and was a coffee farmer in Kenya, had ups and downs but managed to help provide jobs and schooling for some Kenyans. Out of Africa tells the story of her life. It was interesting to hear her story and now we are more eager to finish the movie. Arabica beans are the ones grown here and I had no idea they take 3-4 years to grow and then are picked by hand.

It’s amazing how much museums here cost for non residents! For residents it may be 200 KSH and 1200 KSH for non residents. That basically means that for a resident it is a little less than $2 and for non residents its a little less that $12. That’s just an example, but we aren’t complaining. We are pouring into one of their biggest sources of income - tourism.
We next went to the Nairobi National Museum. We didn’t have a ton of time before they closed, but I think it was enough there. We learned a lot! We had a guided tour, and our guide was able to get the gift shop opened for us although it was closed already. #winning. To pay for things in Nairobi, most places take cash, credit or M-PESA, which is an electric payment app you can use everywhere. I was using the app at the museum gift shop and the cashier saw my last name and looked up to me with a grin. He said “ah Kikuyu???” and I replied with the same answer I’ve given since I’ve been here “nope, but he is Kikuyu lol. This man begins to speak a to Ajali in Kikuyu and also laughs. He laughed harder when Ajali told him he didn’t know the language. The man kept saying things that we neither of us knew, so we just started laughing with him. It was so random lol.
After leaving the museum we stopped at the grocery store to get water, soap and deodorant. One of our bags still has not arrived from Dubai, so we needed to get some personal products for the in between.
I will post video of us shopping at the grocery store once I’m able to reduce the file size.
Off to bed I go, as there are not many hours until my alarm will go off to start today’s adventures! It is currently 1:11am Monday here, June 27.
